about

Tobias Boes

I am Associate Professor of German at the University of Notre Dame, where I also teach courses in the Ph.D. in Literature Program and serve as a Fellow of the Nanovic Institute for European Studies.

A native of Berlin, I grew up in what was then called the “American Sector” and attended the John-F.-Kennedy German-American community school from Kindergarten through the Abitur diploma.  I then moved to Portland, OR, where I earned a B.A. in English literature from Reed College.  After returning to Berlin for a year, I enrolled in the graduate program in Comparative Literature at Yale University, where I earned my Ph.D. in 2006.  In 2007, I moved to South Bend and took up my current position at Notre Dame.

Generally speaking, my research focuses on globalizing approaches to German culture, with special interests in the theory and history of the novel and the modernist period.  More recently, I have also become interested in the intersection between the humanities and environmental studies. You can find additional information using the “research” tab of this website.
