about

Tobias Boes

I am Associate Professor of German at the University of Notre Dame, where I also serve as a Fellow of the Nanovic Institute for European Studies.

A native of Berlin, I grew up in what was then called the “American Sector” and attended the John-F.-Kennedy German-American School from Kindergarten through the Abitur diploma.  I then moved to Portland, OR, where I earned a B.A. in English literature from Reed College.  After returning to Berlin for a year, I enrolled in the graduate program in Comparative Literature at Yale University, where I earned my Ph.D. in 2006.  In 2007, I moved to South Bend and took up my current position at Notre Dame.

Generally speaking, my research focuses on cultural relationships between Germany and the world at large, especially during the first half of the twentieth century.  More recently, I have also become interested in the intersection between the humanities and environmental studies. You can find additional information using the “research” tab of this website.
